Why would God’s people be referred to as a remnant? What is a remnant?
Ponder with me for a moment on this. Think of a remnant from a bulk of cloth. Think of many bulks of cloth.
What if these came together to form a new thing? Like Joseph’s coat of many colors? If we can make something as beautiful as this, imagine what God can create with a remnant…
Was Joseph’s coat of many colors made from remnants? Or did it symbolize remnants? I had never thought of this before I pondered the word remnant. “Now Israel (Jacob) loved Joseph more than any other of his children, because he was the son of his old age; and he made him a coat of many colours.” – Genesis 37:3
Upon Jacob’s deathbed, Joseph’s sons Manasseh and Ephraim received the inheritance of Israel. They were born of a gentile mother. The promises of Abraham to have children as many as the stars in the sky and the sands of the sea were to be through all nations grafted into one. The stick of Joseph to the stick of Judah.
Genesis 20:17- 18 That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.
This leads us to Ezekiel…and the two sticks.
Ezekiel 37:19 “Say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will take the stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel his fellows, and will put them with him, even with the stick of Judah, and make them one stick, and they shall be one in mine hand.”
Psalms 60:7 King James Version
“Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine; Ephraim also is the strength of mine head; Judah is my lawgiver.”
Therefore, seek God’s truth and watch all things so you are not deceived by the wickedness of man’s false promises, and vain deceits that the devil shall and does use against all humanity. We are in a battle, the same battle of old and all time here upon the earth. That battle is spiritual and between God’s commands and the Devils commands. Free will is given to each, and each must choose who they shall believe and follow. For we see not either God nor the devil in their form, but we see both through the deeds of the creation. Be it nature, or man himself, the deeds performed of God are of goodness and order, laws of nature and natural. The deeds of the devil are chaos, lies, deceit, theft, death and confusion. The Lord said, “You shall know them by their fruits (what they bring forth)…not their words.”
That being said, remember Ezra’s warning not to go against God’s commands.
Ezra 9:14 KJV “Should we again break thy commandments, and join in affinity with the people of these abominations? Wouldest not thou be angry with us till thou hadst consumed us, so that there should be no remnant nor escaping?“
The word remnant occurs 92 times in 91 verses in the KJV
In Exodus 26:12 it is referred to as what is left of a curtain; in Leviticus 2:3 it is what is left of the meat offering, also of the oil in Lev. 14:18. In Deuteronomy 3:11 it refers to what is left of the giants, in Joshua 23:12 it refers to nations, in 2nd Kings 21:14 it is a people, and those that will receive God’s inheritance. In Ezra 9:14 there is even a warning not to go against God’s commands and have no remnant to be saved, nor to escape. Which led me to ask, what was the original Greek word for remnant? I sought the definition and found….
From the Greek word “leipo” which means a remainder — remnant.

Part of Speech: Verb
Transliteration: leipó
Phonetic Spelling: (li’-po)
Definition: to leave, leave behind
Usage: (earlier: I leave behind, abandon), (a) I am wanting, (b) mid: e.g. with gen: I come behind (in a race), am left behind in, fall short of (some standard), am wanting in.
So in these days when we refer to God’s people as a remnant…what are we to understand by that label? Is it not in reference to a great falling away? A falling away that only a remnant are left? An abandoned few or what is left of what once was a larger sum of an original source of something?
Matthew 7:16-23 King James Version
16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
That being understood, what type of people ought we be striving to become? Pray to be found in the remnant. Judging not the flesh, but using discernment, pulling some out of the fire even hating the garment defiled by the flesh.
Jude 1- 20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, 21keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. 22And on some have compassion, making a distinction; 23 but others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire, hating even the garment defiled by the flesh.
We are not to judge others, but to have compassion and help build up one another in these days of fear and tribulation. Remember that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God, and all have the same Grace and Mercy of the same Lord and to whom is given much, much is required. Stay strong and fear not for these are wicked days.
For those who fear…have we all been turned into trans-human bots today? Have we all been gathered up and tortured today? Have we all starved today? Have we all been found dying of thirst today? The Lord said it is not what goes into the body and comes out in the drought that defiles a man, but what comes out of his mouth. We are to discern, in a way of edification (understanding and reasoning) and not in a way of destruction. In so doing, we learn from each other and come to the knowledge of the truth. We see what is missing from what we have found and together we build upon the vision that has been given to each and when we share together we have understanding of what has been given for us to see.
Matthew 15:11 In its Context 15: 8-11 “8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. 9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. 10 And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand: 11 Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.“
Therefore, regardless of denomination, God is calling his people to open their eyes to see and ears to hear. He is calling to his remnant to come together. He is calling all to see and hear so they can come out of her my people. Not only out from Babylon the Great, but also from the larger source of what has been called religious denominations with church doctrines and rules set forth by man. (referring to the dogma’s that divide Christ followers between Christ followers).
John 10:16 “ 16 And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.“
This is a spiritual calling to awake and see that there has been a great falling away and now is the time to return to one body of Christ our Lord. God’s remnant is world wide.
For America, it is a clarion call for God’s remnant to return to one nation called by God’s name. For the world it is the very same calling, the very same message for thy Kingdom Come On Earth As It Is In Heaven.
Stay strong and keep pressing forward into the Kingdom!
The Lord is always there to make a way where there is no way….

It made me think, “what does that fire look like in the church?” Here are two definitions I’ve heard recently:
(1) Relativism – when truth is watered down by current social values, so that “my truth” can be anything in sync with today’s culture
(2) Politics – when politics and the church get married, the church gets pregnant, and what it gives birth to is nothing like Jesus Christ.
I’ve struggled with churches like these before, and have abruptly come out of them. Yet today, I want to re-think my role as a member of God’s remnant. If I join a church and these things begin to creep in, why can’t God use use me to call it out, to cite verses like you have posted above, and to speak to others in a loving way? Why can’t I point to it, and ask how that agrees with God’s Word? If enough people begin to understand and agree, maybe God wants to clean up that church and bring it back to a focus on His Son and His Word. Or maybe He wants us to go off and start our own group, to worship and have fellowship in the name of Jesus Christ.
I agree with you, Dianne. The church isn’t the building, or the parking lot, or the free donuts and awful coffee. And it’s not a place to embrace concepts that disagree with God’s Word. It’s the people – – the believers and followers of Jesus Christ. And God can use those of us in that remnant to pull others out of the fire.

I praise God for you calling His people out and for all that you do! As we read and study about God’s remnant….who are these remnant people??
If I may add a bit here? Reading in Galatians 4:21-31 it tells us of an allegory of two covenants – Hagar and Sarah. God had spoken a word to me concerning this and its significance. He is even now in the process of winnowing and threshing to bring out that remnant! Do you feel as though you are taking a beating? Does it seem as though there are too many things hitting against every area of your life? This is God in the process of “threshing.” This process can seem brutal, but trust God for He knows what He is doing!
And what God is doing is this process of separation (Come out of her, My people!). This separation is dividing the false heirs (Hagar’s descendants) from the true heirs (those descendants of Sarah….of FAITH!). This process of threshing and winnowing removes the chaff away from the seeds and with us, God is removing that hull, skin or chaff from our very lives! He is removing the things of the carnal flesh to prepare to work in us a greater work! This greater work is purifying us so that when He gazes upon us…..He sees His Son, Jesus, in us!
Why is the removal of the flesh so very crucial?? It is the very enmity that is being dealt with in this process. The meaning of the word, enmity, is hatred. The Greek word used in several verses comes from the root word – echthros – which means hatred towards God. It is this enmity which is our own carnal flesh! (See Rom. 8:7 and James 4:4) It is this very enmity which our Lord and Savior nailed to the cross! Eph. 2:15-16. Because Jesus nailed this hatred against God to the cross….He then became the first fruits, not only of eternal life….but of ETERNAL OBEDIENCE to the Father God!! It is because of the loving mercy of God that He closed off the Garden of Eden to Adam and Eve!! Had they been convinced to partake of the fruit of the Tree of Eternal Life AFTER taking of the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil….THIS would have caused them to be FOREVER DISOBEDIENT to GOD!! That was the plan of satan and continues to be to this very day!! IT would make us just like the fallen angels!! These beings are forever, eternally disobedient to the will of the Father!
The Word says that we cannot serve two masters (Mt. 6:24: Lk. 16:13). God is shaking things up for us to make the choice! Complacency is NO longer an option! Choose wisely!
The choice is very clear, you choose good, or you choose evil. Very simple. Yes to Christ or no to Christ. You make the call. I know what I’m doing. Thank you so much for your encouragement.
