Is the petri dish meat grown from a biopsy of a human tissue sample the same as eating human flesh? Is it the same as cannibalism?
The concept is not new… it goes back to Winston Churchill in 1931 and trust me if he was talking about it then…it goes back even further.
I’m sure it began with some dark lab during the first eugenics experiments… but for sure it was publicly promoted and revealed back in 2014 when a company that harvested human tissue to make meat products like salami… called BiteLabs claimed they wanted to make human test-tube meat and of course…use celebrities to do it.

So while the recent Bill Gates cry to make petri dish meat sounded Sci Fi and people balked at that concept… it appears the first celebrity biopsy tissue growing it in a dish wasn’t all that successful. No more than Gates idea is now.

In a statement, CEO Rom Kshuk, of Future Meat says its facility is capable of producing 500 kg of lab-grown meat products every day, the equivalent of 3,000 medium-sized burgers. ” The opening of this facility marks an important milestone in Future Meat Technologies’ journey to market, as it is a critical way to get our products to the shelves by 2022.
The company claims that cultured meat generates 80% less greenhouse gas emissions, uses 99% less land and uses 96% less water than traditional meat production. So you see… you now have tissue growing and no need for the rest of the animal. Gee, what will they think of next?
According to the company, the first factory can manufacture chicken, pork and lamb meat, and soon beef products. The process is about 20 times faster than raising and slaughtering animals, and it’s getting cheaper faster than expected, the statement said. ABSTRACT OF IN-VITRO MEAT
The in-vitro meat is a novel concept in food biotechnology comprising field of tissue engineering and cellular agriculture. It involves production of edible biomass by in-vitro culture of stem cells harvested from the muscle of live animals by self-organizing or scaffolding methodology. It is considered as efficient, environmentally friendly, better ensuring public safety and nutritional security, as well as ethical way of producing meat. Source of stem cells, media ingredients, supply of large size bioreactors, skilled manpower, sanitary requirements, production of products with similar sensory and textural attributes as of conventional meat, consumer acceptance, and proper set up of regulatory framework are challenges faced in commercialization and consumer acceptance of in-vitro meat.
IN-VITRO MEAT AS FUTURE OF SOURCE OF ANIMAL PROTEIN
In some media and public debates, the meat derived from cell culturing is termed as synthetic meat, lab meat, cell-based meat, factory grown meat, Frankenstein meat or artificial meat. During its initial developmental stage, the term in-vitro meat or cultured meat was commonly used with later one was preferred by some researchers due to the process of culturing the tissues in production of this new and innovative meat source. The term clean meat is also increasingly used from 2015 onwards in various communications. It seems more positive and appropriate to consumers than the term cultured meat due to sustainability, slaughter-free and well controlled sanitation at the time of production as compared to traditional meat.
